This tutorial explains how to write protect USB drive.

Making your USB drive (flash drive or Pendrive) write protected has multiple benefits. Other people can’t modify or edit the file contents, delete files or folders, move your data, format your USB drive, viruses and malware won’t attack (if you connect your Pendrive to infected PC) and more. So when you have to share your flash drive with someone, it’s better to set write protection to prevent any data loss.In this tutorial, I have covered 3 different ways to add write protection to your flash drive. First two methods don’t need any third-party tool and the third way to write protect USB drive is by using a free software. You can also disable write protection whenever needed.
how to set write protection to your USB drives
In the screenshot above, you can see the message when someone or you will try to delete or modify data available in a write protected USB drive.

Why Should You Write Protect Your USB Drive?

Although I have already mentioned the benefits of setting up the write protection, but there is an incidence which I want to share with you guys. This morning, one of my colleagues was arguing with another colleague that you have deleted some important data and infected my flash drive. My second colleague was saying “I’m innocent”, but first colleague was blaming him again and again. So, I thought it would be great to help you guys and share an article on how to write protect USB drive. If you don’t want to get stuck in such kind of situation and have to protect your data before sharing your Pendrive, it’s really important to set write protection.
Now let’s start with the very first method to set write protection in USB drive.

1. Write Protect USB Drive using Command Prompt:

In this method, you need to execute some simple commands and your flash drive will write protect. Steps are as follows:
Step 1: Launch Command Prompt window as administrator, type diskpart‘, and press Enter.
Step 2: Now you have to execute ‘list disk‘ command. It will help to show your connected Pendrive. It must be Disk 1. See the screenshot below:
view list of disks and select your flash drive
Step 3: Type select disk 1‘ to chose that disk and execute the command. Your disk is now selected.
Step 4: This command is used to check the attributes of your flash drive. For this, type ‘attributes disk‘ and press Enter. You will see Read-only status, Boot disk, Current Read-only State, and other properties.
check attributes of disk
Step 5: This is the most important step which will help you to enable the write protection. Type ‘attributes disk set readonly‘ and execute this command.
set readonly mode to write protect USB drive
Your USB drive is write protected now. You can check the status by executing the attributes disk command. Now, whenever someone will try to modify, add, or remove the data from your USB drive, he/she will get an error.
Step 6: This step is needed to undo the changes. Repeat step 1 to step 3 and then execute attributes disk clear readonly. It will remove the write protection.
disable write protection mode

2. Write Protect USB Drive using Registry Editor:

Steps are as follows:
Step 1: Open Windows start menu, type Regedit in Run box, and execute it. It will open Registry Editor window.
Step 2: Now access Control folder (or say key) using these steps:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE–>SYSTEM–>CurrentControlSet–>Control.
access Control folder and create a new key
Step 3: After accessing that folder, you need to create a new key with the name ‘StorageDevicePolicies‘. For this, right-click on the right part and click on Key using New option. Now create your folder. See the screenshot mentioned above.
Step 4: Select that folder and generate a new key with the name, WriteProtect, under that folder using the right section. Right click to access New option and select ‘DWORD (32-bit) Value‘. It will help to create WriteProtect key.
generate WriteProtect key under StorageDevicePolicies folder
Step 5: When that key is created, double-click on that key, and a pop-up will open. In that pop-up, set Value data to 1 and press OK button.
execute WriteProtect data and set value data to 1
It will set write protection to your USB drive.
Step 6: This step is handy when you have to disable the write protection. Follow step 1 to step 5 and set Value data to 0.

3. Write Protect USB Drive using Some Free Software:

There are many free software which you can use to write protect USB drive. One of those software is USB WriteProtect. Install this software and launch it. After this, you need to follow two basic steps:
Step 1: Insert your flash drive. After this, tap on Protect button available on its interface. It will immediately set write protection to your USB drive. Actually, such software help to skip the manual work you need to create WriteProtect key in Registry Editor.
USB WriteProtect- interface
Step 2: Whenever you need to disable the protection, simply press UnProtectbutton.

All the above-mentioned methods are so easy to use and great to set the write protection to your USB drive. It is completely your choice which way you want to use. I will personally prefer as well as recommend Command Prompt method which is the safest way.

How To Create Animated PNG from PNG and TGA Images

This tutorial explains how to create animated PNG from PNG and TGA images.
APNG Assembler is a free software to generate animated PNG file from still PNG and TGA images. You can add multiple supported images on its interface and quickly create APNG file which you can use wherever you want. For every single input image, you can also set the time delay that makes it more interesting. You can set time (in seconds) when the next image will appear after the current frame while playing your APNG image.
This process to generate APNG file is similar like creating animated GIF. Multiple images are packed (known as frames) to create a single animated file. Although, APNG file is not so popular as compared to GIF file. However, for any reason, if you want to create an APNG file, this software will be very useful.

bove screenshot, shows the interface of this software and an animated PNG file created by me using this software.
Note: Make sure all input images are of the same size (height and width), otherwise it will show an error. Moreover, it checks the size of the first image and consider that size to be exactly same for the rest of the images. You have to resize all the images, before inserting them on its interface.
You may also check apng2gif, APNG Disassembler, and gif2apng.

How To Create Animated PNG from PNG and TGA Images using This Free Software?

Following steps will help you to easily create an animated PNG file using this freeware:
Step 1: Download its zip file using the link placed at the end of this tutorial. That zip file contains the portable application file of this software. You need to extract the zip file and execute its application file.
Step 2: On its interface, drop the PNG and/or TGA files that you want to convert into animated PNG.

Step 3: After adding the images, it’s your choice whether you want to manually set delay time (in seconds) for input images or want to keep the default delay time. To add delay time for a particular image or multiple images, just select the image(s), and click onDelays – Selected Frames button. It will open a small box, like visible in the screenshot below.
set delay time
Add time delay in seconds and click Set button. You can also use right-click context menu option to select time delay for selected images.
use right-click context menu option to set delay time
Step 4: In this step, you can set ‘Playback Settings’ for output. You can set number of loops to play the animated PNG or can set it for infinite loops.
Step 5: Use Compression Settings button that will help to optimize the size of APNG file. You can use zlib, 7zip, or zopfli option for adjusting the compression level. Apart from this, you can also optimize color settings by enabling the Optimize palette (color palette) and Optimize color type option.

Step 6: In this final step, you can select destination location for the output file. After this, tap on Make Animated PNG button. Process to generate APNG file, will start which won’t take much time.

After generating the APNG file, you can play it with Firefox browser, or some standalone application that supports *.apng format.

APNG Assembler is really handy for creating an Animated PNG file using TGA and PNG images. Its feature to set time delay for individual image or for multiple images is also good.

How to Easily Take Ownership of Any File or Folder on Windows

If you have to work in a shared system environment you might be aware of the fact that taking ownership of a file or a folder on Windows can be a complicated chore. Even the seemingly simple task of adding URLs to a Windows Host file requires the user to become an owner of the file by going into the file security settings and acquiring full access permissions to work on it. Having so many steps to complete, even when you have an admin account can be a bit frustrating.
Put the tug-of-war with your computer behind you.
Image by Sergey Rusakov via Shutterstock.
If it’s just one file, making a change might not be too time consuming, but if you do this on a regular basis, then use this simple tool called TakeOwnershipPro to easily deal with file ownership issues.

TakeOwnershipPro for Windows

TakeOwnershipPro is a free, lightweight program that makes the process of gaining file ownership take not more than a mouse click. To get started, you can download the setup file and install it on your system. The installer is clean, with no third-party apps attached, so you can simply follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
Now if you need to take ownership of any folder, launch TakeOwnershipPro, click the Add button to choose the folder or file of which you want to take ownership, or simply drag and drop the file from Windows Explorer.
Now all you need to do is click Take Ownership and wait for the tool to do its magic. Don’t forget to check the option Include subfolders and files if you wish to take ownership of everything that’s in the folder you selected.
The tool also adds itself to the Windows right-click context menu, so you can simply right click on a file or a folder to take ownership. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, click Yesto allow TakeOwnershipPro to run and make changes.
context menu

How the Tool Works

The tool simply automates the task of taking ownership of a file through its folder security settings, but most everyday Windows users are unaware of what this means. TakeOwnershipPro adds ‘Everyone’ as an owner and gives full control of that particular folder to the user.
remove everyone from security settings
If you wish to delete the complete ownership of the file, all you have to do is go into theAdvanced Security Settings and delete the Everyone permission that has been added by TakeOwnershipPro

That was how you can easily take ownership of any file or folder. The app works on Windows 7 and above and is free to use without any limitations. So next time you get a message from Windows saying you don’t have permission to access a particular file or folder, all you need to do is use TakeOwnershipPro and show Windows who’s boss.

Fix “This device can’t use a Trusted Platform Module” When Enabling BitLocker

I recently tried to enable BitLocker on an old Windows 8.1 PC at home and got an error message that I found would be extremely cryptic to anyone who isn’t a computer geek. Here was the message:
This device can’t use a Trusted Platform Module. Your administrator must select the “Allow BitLocker without a compatible TPM” option in the “Require additional authentication at startup” policy for OS volumes.
Say what!? Most people will probably just cancel the operation and forget about the whole thing with a message like that. Unfortunately, Microsoft never makes error messages clear and simple to understand. Let’s break it down.
bitlocker error
1. Trusted Platform Module (TPM) - This is basically a chip that in on newer processors that has extra security features. When BitLocker uses TPM, it stores the encryption key on the chip itself. If you don’t have a chip that supports TPM, then you can still use BitLocker, but you’ll have to store the encryption key on a USB stick.
2. Administrator Policy –  So what’s all the stuff about selecting X and Y policy for OS volumes? Basically, it’s a group policy setting that has to be changed that will allow BitLocker to work without the TPM requirement.
The fix is pretty straight-forward, just follow the instructions and don’t make any other changes.
Step 1- Open the group policy editor by pressing the Windows Key + R or by opening the charms bar in Windows 8 and typing in Run. In the Run dialog box, go ahead and type in gpedit.msc and press Enter.
gpedit msc
Now expand to the following section under group policy:
Computer Configuration – Administrative Templates – Windows Components – BitLocker Drive Encryption – Operating System Drives
On the right-hand side, you will see an option called Require additional authentication at startup. Go ahead and double-click on that option.
additional authentication startup
By default, it is set to Not Configured, so you’ll have to click on the Enabled radio button.  Automatically, it should check the Allow BitLocker without a compatible TPM box, but if not, make sure to check it.
bitlocker without tpm
Click OK and then close out group policy. Now go back to the BitLocker screen and click the Turn on BitLocker link.
turn on bitlocker
Now instead of getting an error message, you should see the BitLocker setup screen. When you click Next, it’ll start setting up your hard drive for BitLocker.
bitlocker setup
Again, there is no real security disadvantage to using BitLocker without a TPM, it’s just that the encryption key has to be stored on a USB drive instead of being stored on the chip itself. If you’re still having issues enabling BitLocker on Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, post a comment and let us know. Enjoy!

How to Add Comments to an Excel Worksheet Cell

I’m a big user of Excel and it always amazes me how few people add comments to their Excel spreadsheets! Adding and using comments in Excel is a great way to explain formulas, cells, and other data in the spreadsheet itself, thus saving you the time spent on the phone with colleagues! It’s really easy to add comments to cells in Excel and I’ll explain how you can do so in Excel XP/2003, Excel 2007, Excel 2010 and Excel 2013.
Comments are basically notes that can be inserted into any cell in Excel. It’s useful for reminders, notes for others, and for cross-referencing other workbooks. Note that newer versions of office have a option called Show Inkin the Comments toolbar and this is only useful for tablet PCs. The feature basically lets you handwrite a comment instead of typing one. On desktops and laptops, though, it’s only useful for viewing hand-written comments created on a tablet PC.
Also, there are a lot of other things you can do with comments once you add them to a worksheet like formatting, changing the shape, resizing and so on. Scroll to the bottom of the post for those tips.

Add Comments to an Excel 2013 Cell

Excel 2013 looks a bit different than 2010, but overall it’s pretty much the same. To add a comment, click on the Review tab and click on New Comment once you have selected the desired cell.
excel 2013 comment
Now just type in your comment and when you navigate away from that cell, you’ll see a small red triangle in the upper right corner of the cell indicating that the cell has a comment.
cell comment

Add Comments to an Excel 2010 Cell

In Excel 2010, adding a comment is super easy and the same as 2013. Just click on the Review tab and you’ll see all the commenting tools. Click on the cell you want to add the comment to and then click on New Comment.
review new comment
A small dialog window will appear where you can begin typing in text. You’ll also notice the small little red triangle at the top right of the cell, which is there to indicate that cell has a comment.
comment added
You can quickly see all comments on a worksheet by clicking on the Show All Comments button. This comes in handy if the sheet has a bunch of comments. You can also click Previous and Next to cycle through all the comments one by one.

Add Comments to an Excel 2007 Cell

The procedure for Excel 2007 is the same as above. The first thing you’ll want to do is click on the cell where you want to insert the comment. Click on the Review tab in the ribbon bar to view the comment editing tools.
excel comments
In the Comments group, click on New Comment. In the Excel spreadsheet a comment text box will appear where you can type in your new comment.
add comment
Type in your comment and click outside of the text box when you are done. You’ll notice that there is a small red arrow at the top right of the cell, indicating that this cell has a comment. Clicking on the cell automatically brings up the comment.
add comment excel

Add Comments to an Excel XP/2003 Cell

In Excel 2003 and XP, you have a couple of more options for inserting comments into a cell since there is no ribbon bar. You can use the menus at the top, the mouse context-menu or the reviewing toolbar.

Add Comments Using Menu Bar

First, you need to click on the cell that you want to insert the comment into. Then click on the Insert menu option and choose Comment.
insert comment
Just like in 2007, a text box will appear next to the cell where you can enter your comment. Also, a red triangle appears at the upper right hand corner of the cell.

Add Comments Using Mouse Context Menu

Another simple, yet nifty way to insert a comment into an Excel cell is to simply right-click on the cell and choose Insert Comment. This actually works in both Excel 2007 and Excel 2003.
add comments to excel

Add Comments Using Reviewing Toolbar

Finally, you can use the Reviewing toolbar in Excel to add comments to cells. To open the Reviewing toolbar, go to View, Toolbars, and choose Reviewing.
reviewing toolbar
The first icon on the far left is the New Comment button. Click on it and a new comment box will appear in the currently selected cell.
new comment

Resize a Comment

Now let’s talk about a couple of things you can do with the comments once they have been added. Firstly, let’s just simply resize the comment. To do that, click and drag one of the handles on the corners or sides of the comment box.
resize comment

Format a Comment

By default, there is no formatting on a comment, but what if you want to change the font or increase the size of the text? To format a comment, you first click on the cell and then click Edit Comment. Then you right-click anywhere inside the comment and choose Format Comment.
format comment
You’ll now be able to change the font family, font style, font size, font color and font effects. You are now free to make your comments look as ugly or beautiful as you like.
format comment options

Change Shape of Comment

By default, the comment box is a rectangle, but you can actually change the shape of the comment. It would have been nice if they had added that option to the Comments section on the Review tab, but for some reason it’s not there. Instead you have to add the shape button to the quick access toolbar.
To do this, click on the File tab and then click on Options.
excel options
Now you need to click on Quick Access Toolbar on the left hand side first. At the top, you’ll see aChoose commands from drop down; go ahead and select All Commands from the list. Scroll down until you see Edit Shape, click on it and then click on the Add>> button.
add edit shape
To change the shape of the comment, click on the cell and click Edit Comment first. Then click on the new Edit Shape button in the quick access toolbar and you’ll be presented with a whole slew of shapes you can choose from.
change comment shape

Copy Comments to Different Cells

If you want to copy a comment from one cell to another, it’s also fairly-straight-forward. Just select the cell and then press CTRL + C to copy the contents. Next, go to the other cell, right-click and choose Paste Special.
paste special comments
Select Comments from the list and only the comments will be inserted into the new cell. Anything else currently residing in the cell will remain the same.

Change Windows User to Your Own Name

You may have noticed in the screenshots above that some of the comments start out with “Windows User” and that’s because the copy of Office is registered to that name by default. You can change this by going toFile, clicking on Options and then clicking on General.
office user name
You can leave it blank if you want nothing to appear in the comment or change it to whatever text you like. This will appear at the top of all comments by default.

Remove Comment Indicator From Cells

Lastly, what if you want to hide those little red triangles from the top of the cells blocks even if a comment does exist? Well, that’s easy also. Go to FileOptions and then Advanced.
show hide comments
Scroll down to Display and then you’ll see a section called For cells with comments, show: and here you can choose from three options: No comment or indicatorsIndicators only, and comments on hover or Comments and indicators.
That’s about all there is you can do with comments in Excel so hopefully this will make you look like an Excel pro at your office. If you have any qestions, post a comment. Enjoy
